NOTES FOR THE PERFORMER
This wind quintet has a fairly tonal character, with influences from popular and jazz music. It is in four movements, each in a different style.
Mvt. 1: Latin Mood, Andante (66 BPM) - Allegro (112 BPM),
Meter: 4/4 - 5/4 - 7/4, Key: F - Bb, 135 mm (6'00).
The opening movement starts with a maestoso introduction, followed by a
light latin mood with frequently changing irregular meter. It contains
brief double tempo sections the clarinet.
Mvt. 2: Blues Waltz, Presto (196 BPM), Meter: 3/4,
Key: Bb - Ab Mixolydian, 245 mm. (3'45).
The 2nd movement is an up-tempo cheerful waltz in blues style, with a
lead for flute oboe. It is in three-part form, featuring the horn
in the middle section.
Mvt. 3: Ballade, Andantino (68 BPM), Meter: 9/8, Key: Fm - Cm, 52 mm. (6'10).
The 3rd movement is a ballad in minor, featuring the bassoon and oboe.
Its main returns in several variations, closed by brief chorale-like
phrases.
Mvt. 4: Finale, Allegro (120 BPM), Meter: 4/4,
Key: G, 151 mm. (5'00).
Finally, the closing movement sets a humorous mood. The main theme
is played unisono at the start and is developed throughout the movement.
There is a lot of phrases containing counterpoint. Grade: medium to difficult.
