NOTES FOR THE PERFORMER
In this arrangement of the ballad My one and only love the melodic material is mainly assigned to the softer tone colours. Prominent are multi-part voicings (block chords) for horns and trombones (from m. 17, 33 and 68). There is frequent use of mutes in the brass; trumpets use mutes only.
The musical climaxes are in the third A-section of the first (from m. 33) and the second chorus (from m. 68) and, though being somewhat weaker, in the bridge of the second chorus (mm. 56-59).
Besides extended jazz harmonisations there are a number of counterpoint voicings (mm. 37-39, 48-51 and 56-59), plus one fragment with `double time feeling' (mm. 56-59). Woodwinds only occasionally take a melodic lead; they are mostly used for counter-melodies in a figurative sense. All counter-melodies are derived from the main theme, using rhythmical diminution and augmentation (see for example the tubular bells part).
