NOTES FOR THE PERFORMER
Song based on the poem L'horloge from the collection Les fleurs du mal by Charles Baudelaire. The baritone solo voice (high tessitura, or alternatively tenor) is accompanied by an acoustic guitar. The sinister lyrics express the ticking away of time and remind man of his rapidly approaching end; this is expressed by various tempo changes. The guitar part uses various effects to illustrate the meaning of the lyrics: natural harmonics, strumming (flamenco style), tapping the strings near the bridge and knocking the soundboard with the knuckles.
