NOTES FOR THE PERFORMER
This wintery song is the first part of the Seasonal Songs cycle. The slow introduction presents the melody in the tuba with baritone background and the first hesitating snow flakes in the high woodwinds. In m. 25 there is a transition to a medium tempo Jazz Waltz featuring the tenor saxophone and the flugelhorn as solo instruments. From m. 73 these have alternating ad lib solos, accompanied by the orchestra. This score provides template solos for both instruments. In m. 136 the music, now in the form of a fast regular (Vienna) waltz, gusts up to a full blizzard, that from m. 129 gradually eases down. The leading instruments dispense their final flakes in the coda.
Concert performance:
This arrangement has been performed by the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy (Conductor: Peter Kleine Schaars).
