NOTES FOR THE PERFORMER

The song Die Engel is composed for female choir (3 parts). The lyrics are from a series of poems, Das Buch der Bilder, des Ersten Buches erster Teil, by Rainer Maria Rilke, published in 1902.

The harmonic material is based on either chords in fourths (third omitted), or on the all-interval 4-pitch harmonic structures. This leads to modal and atonal phrases in chorale or counterpoint style. Melody and setting closely follow the lyrics from this three-stanza poem.
