NOTES FOR THE PERFORMER
The melody (partly in 5/4 meter) for this Latin style composition for jazz big band is based on the main theme from the opening movement of my recently composed wind quintet.
Throughout the piece a number of latin moods will be touched upon (mambo, cha-cha, afro-cuban). The main kay for this piece is F major, although there are frequent modulations. There is also frequent use of irregular meters (interchanging 4/4, 5/4, 7/4, 6/8 and 9/8).
There are no ad lib solos in this piece: all solo lines have been written out. The piece contains a number of brief piano solo sections (featuring 'the Cousin') that serve as transitions. Both these and a number of ensemble sections use chords in fourths abundantly. Muting is required for trumpets (harmon, cup) and trombones (cup).
